Accredited Psychotherapist and Counsellor based in Aberdeenshire
Taking steps to find a therapist can be an anxious process, often done at a time when you realise you might need additional help. The basis of any good therapy is the therapeutic relationship. therefore it is important you find the right therapy and therapist for you.
My name is Emma Barclay, My main profession is within the NHS Adult Mental Health Services. For over 20 years I have worked within the NHS with a variety of patients with complex needs including emotional, relational and mental health issues.
Here's what a recent client said:
As someone who has never been keen to seek the help of any form of therapy, I found myself in a situation where this became necessary. I immediately felt comfortable with Emma and felt able to talk freely in a safe environment. She helped me look at situations from a different perspective & enabled me to make informed choices. I would highly recommend Emma.
For over ten years, I have worked as a Group Analyst, Mentalization Based Therapist, and Psychodynamic Psychotherapist. I work with both individuals and groups. I am a member of the Institute of Group Analysis (mem.ist. GA London) and I am a qualified Mentalization Based Therapist (roster with British Psychoanalytic Council). I am also a qualified Group supervisor, providing both group and individual supervision as well as being a member of the UKCP as a clinician and supervisor.
My practice is founded upon theoretical knowledge, and therapeutic skills, based on many years of experience, enabling me to provide treatment which is specific to the individual and group needs. My work is informed by theory and experience of psychodynamic and analytical process.
Any type of counselling or therapy involves the meeting of two people within a safe and trusted therapeutic relationship, with the shared commitment to understand and explore your difficulties. This means we both work together but the focus will be thinking and exploring you and your difficulties. Our focus is always you, your mind and the issues you bring. To facilitate this process, sessions are at the same time, as much as possible, with a shared interest and commitment to your needs.
Sometimes only a short number of sessions are enough; others may feel a longer period of time is needed to fully understand and explore areas of their life which may have affected them, perhaps since childhood. All communication is important, and part of my approach is to attend to both the conscious and unconscious material that may emerge during the session, perhaps offering new information on an old problem.
Mentalizing therapy is effective for individuals and groups. The focus is on exploring and understanding emotions, behaviours and intentions, both within ourselves and others. Research has shown Mentalization can be of benefit to people diagnosed with borderline traits or personality disorder.
Treatment can also help:
Initial appointments can be made via email and a follow-up telephone call. I offer an initial meeting where we can talk through the main areas of why you would like therapy now, and what your main aims of the work would be. (I offer an initial discussion where we can talk through the areas you would like therapy to address, and if we feel we can work therapeutically together). We can then agree on a number of sessions.
Online or Face to Face sessions
All sessions can be done via Skype or we can work face to face at my private therapy room in Kemnay, Aberdeenshire.
Fees:
Fees are between £60-80 per hour and agreed after initial meeting. Fees are revised annually.
Please discuss any financial hardship, as this should not disqualify you from seeking help. An invoice can be provided if required.
